Mas Agua Para Todos
Adapting to CC and Mitigating Water Scarcity by Innovative UWM in Cuba

Result 3

Enhance the knowledge, education and research capacities on innovative urban water cycle practices in the Cuban water sector

In order to secure a proper, timely and fruitful execution of the different proposed activities, the first goal of this activity is to train local staff from CUJAE, INRH and IIIA on the state-of-the-art knowledge and research on innovative urban water management in The Netherlands (UNESCO-IHE).  This builds up on the SALINE project led by UNESCO-IHE (SALINE project ) and the wide expertise and experience on the optimization of wastewater treatment systems using modern engineering and process approaches (such as mathematical modelling  and membrane bioreactor technologies).

In order to expand the innovative character of the project beyond the project duration, project activities and results will be transferred into undergraduate and postgraduate materials to be used as a complementary part of curricula at Cuban universities not only at BSc and MSc level but also for training of final users and stakeholders through short-courses. Given the project’s interdisciplinary nature the courses can be used at different university faculties.

The project contemplates the execution of "Training of Local Trainers" workhops by UNESCO-IHE, CUJAE, INRH and IIIA, and world leading experts, for Cuban water professionals from different sectors (ministry, education, consultancy, industry, etc). This will have a direct impact on the consolidation of local institutions and possible emerging centralized entities, through increasing the knowledge in Cuba on innovative water management practices, strengthening the local knowledge and research capabilities.

Overall, this activity will contribute to secure the continuum of the project by strengthening the knowledge, education and research capacities on innovative (urban) water cycle practices in the Cuban water sector.
